Ecommerce Migrations & Replatforming

ECOMMERCE MIGRATIONS & REPLATFORMING

Move Your Store Without Losing What Took Years to Build

Every ecommerce platform migration is really three migrations at once: your data, your search equity, and your operations. Most replatforming horror stories come from treating it as just the first one.

Sandcastle has been building and moving ecommerce stores since 2001, across Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, nopCommerce, AbleCommerce, and the custom and legacy platforms that came before them. We’ve seen what each platform’s export actually contains, what the destination’s import actually expects, and where the gap between the two quietly eats order history, customer accounts, and rankings.

Bridging that gap is the job.

Moving off AbleCommerce specifically? See AbleCommerce to Shopify or BigCommerce: what transfers and what doesn’t.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG, AND USUALLY DOES

A storefront redesign is the visible part of a migration, and it’s the easy part.

The failures live underneath: product data that maps imperfectly and surfaces as wrong variants and broken options; customer accounts that can’t carry passwords across platforms, forcing a mass reset nobody planned to communicate; years of category and product URLs that change without redirects, shedding search rankings your business was quietly built on; integrations (accounting, shipping, email, subscriptions) that worked on the old platform and silently don’t on the new one; and features your old cart did natively that the new one doesn’t, discovered after launch instead of before.

None of these are exotic. They’re the default outcome of a migration run as a data-dump-and-redesign.

Avoiding them is a matter of doing the unglamorous work in the right order.

HOW WE RUN AN ECOMMERCE MIGRATION

Discovery and Gap Analysis

Discovery and Gap Analysis

Before anything moves, we inventory what your current platform is actually doing: catalog structure, customizations, integrations, order flows, and the features your team relies on without thinking about them.

Then we map each one against the destination platform. Anything the new platform doesn’t do natively gets flagged now, with a plan: build it, replace it with an app, or make a deliberate decision to leave it behind.

No surprises after launch.

Data Migration

Data Migration

Products, variants, categories, customers, order history, reviews, gift certificates.

We map the schemas, script the transfer, and reconcile the counts, then spot-check the records that matter, because a migration that’s 99% clean still means hundreds of wrong pages on a large catalog.

Search Equity Preservation

Search Equity Preservation

Every URL that changes gets a 301 redirect.

We crawl the old site, map old paths to new, preserve your metadata and structured data, and monitor rankings through the cutover window.

Replatforming should be invisible to Google; when it isn’t, you pay for the migration twice.

Design and Rebuild

Design and Rebuild

Sometimes a migration carries the existing design to the new platform’s theme framework; sometimes it’s the right moment for a redesign.

Either way, our designers are front-end developers, so what gets designed is what ships: responsive, fast, and built for search from the first template.

Integrations and Custom Logic

Integrations and Custom Logic

The connective work is where our development background earns its keep: re-implementing ERP, accounting, shipping, and fulfillment integrations on the new platform’s APIs, and rebuilding the custom order logic, B2B workflows, punchout connections, and SSO that off-the-shelf apps don’t cover.
Parallel Testing and Cutover

Parallel Testing and Cutover

The new store runs alongside the old one until it’s verified: test orders, payment flows, tax, shipping rates, emails, redirects.

Launch day should be an anticlimax.

We plan cutover for your slow window, watch it live, and stay on afterward, because the two weeks after launch always surface something.

PLATFORM GUIDANCE & POST-LAUNCH SUPPORT

Which platforms, and which direction?

We work in Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and nopCommerce, and we know AbleCommerce down to the source. Because we know all of them, we can move a store between any of them in either direction, rather than steering you toward the one platform we happen to sell.

Platforms we migrate stores from and to: Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and WordPress, nopCommerce, AbleCommerce (source level, including Gold editions), Magento and Magento 2, Volusion, and Squarespace.

What we have actually delivered, as distinct from what we can do: we have carried out AbleCommerce migrations, moved ChefShop to Shopify, and done nopCommerce moves in both directions. Where we have not run a specific pairing before, we will say so rather than imply otherwise. What carries across every one of them is the part that matters: the data model mapping, the search equity work, and the integrations that have to keep working on the far side.

Can you move a store off Shopify?

If you are moving to Shopify rather than away from it, our Shopify migration and development page covers what transfers, what does not, and the ChefShop migration we ran.

Yes. Shopify is a good platform and we recommend it often, but it is not right for every business, and already being on it is not by itself a reason to stay.

The usual reasons to leave are transaction fees at volume, B2B requirements that need more control than the platform gives, a custom checkout Shopify will not allow, or a corporate standard that lands somewhere else. If one of those is your situation, the move to BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or nopCommerce is a normal project, and we scope it the same way we scope a move in the other direction.

What does ecommerce replatforming actually involve?

Ecommerce replatforming means moving your store from one platform to another while keeping the things that took years to build: your product data, your customer accounts and order history, your search rankings, and the integrations your business runs on.

The rebuild is the visible part and the smallest risk. The risk lives in the data and the URLs.

AN HONEST READ ON PLATFORMS

We work across multiple platforms, which means our recommendation isn’t attached to a quota.

If you come to us pointed at a platform that’s wrong for your business model (B2B requirements it can’t meet, a catalog shape it fights, total cost that doesn’t pencil), we’ll tell you before the migration starts, not after.

And if your current platform is actually fine and your problems are fixable in place, we’ll tell you that too.

A migration you don’t need is the most expensive kind.

AFTER THE MOVE

Most of our client relationships run five, ten, fifteen years, and a migration is usually the beginning of one, not the end of a project.

The team that moved your store stays available for the ongoing theme work, integrations, and steady stream of changes a live store generates, an email away, with no re-briefing required.

CHEFSHOP ECOMMERCE STUDY

A successful ecommerce migration depends on careful planning, clean data mapping, SEO preservation, and post-launch support.

The ChefShop migration case study is a helpful example of how Sandcastle approaches complex ecommerce moves with attention to both platform details and business continuity.

FAQ

What is ecommerce replatforming?

Ecommerce replatforming means moving an online store from one ecommerce platform to another.

A real replatforming project includes more than moving data. It also involves preserving search rankings, rebuilding workflows, reconnecting integrations, testing checkout, and making sure the new platform supports how the business actually operates.

What can go wrong during an ecommerce migration?

Product data can map incorrectly, customer accounts may require password resets, URLs can change without redirects, integrations can break, and platform-specific features may not exist on the new system.

Most migration problems happen when a project is treated as a simple export and import instead of a full operational move.

How do you protect SEO during an ecommerce migration?

We crawl the old site, map old URLs to new URLs, create 301 redirects, preserve important metadata and structured data, and monitor the cutover window.

The goal is for replatforming to be as invisible to Google as possible.

Can customer accounts and order history be migrated?

In many cases, yes. Customer records and order history can often be migrated, but the exact process depends on the source platform and the destination platform.

Passwords usually cannot be moved directly between platforms, so password reset communication and account access planning need to be handled before launch.

Do you migrate products, variants, and categories?

Yes. We migrate products, variants, categories, and related catalog data.

Because every platform structures product data differently, we map schemas, script the transfer, reconcile counts, and spot-check important records before launch.

Can you migrate ecommerce integrations too?

Yes. Integrations are one of the most important parts of a migration.

We can help re-implement ERP, accounting, shipping, fulfillment, email, subscription, B2B, punchout, SSO, and other integrations using the destination platform’s APIs and available tools.

Do you recommend the ecommerce platform?

Yes. We work across multiple ecommerce platforms, so our recommendation is not tied to a single platform.

If the platform you are considering is not a good fit for your business model, catalog, integrations, B2B workflows, or budget, we will say that before the migration starts.

Should I migrate platforms or fix my current store?

Not every ecommerce problem requires a migration.

If your current platform is still the right fit and the problems can be fixed in place, we will tell you. A migration you do not need is the most expensive kind.

How long does an ecommerce migration take?

The timeline depends on the size of the store, the complexity of the catalog, the amount of order history, the number of integrations, and whether custom workflows need to be rebuilt.
