CASE STUDY: Migrating ChefShop.com to Shopify
Hand-Curated Ingredients, Improved by Modern Technology
Since 1997, ChefShop.com has curated an exceptional collection of artisan foods sourced from independent producers around the globe. Their loyal customer base relies on them not only for premium ingredients, but for the stories and culture behind the food. With a legacy built on thoughtful curation and personal connection, ChefShop needed a modern ecommerce platform to support their evolving needs—without losing the character that defines their brand.
Sandcastle Web Design & Development has partnered with ChefShop since 2014, providing development and support for their previous ecommerce platform, AbleCommerce. But in 2025, ChefShop made the decision to transition to a SaaS-based solution that would better align with their retail goals, support in-store and online purchasing, and improve day-to-day operations.
Project Goals
ChefShop’s vision for the new platform centered on six key objectives:
- Modernize the ecommerce experience with a responsive, mobile-friendly design that preserved their unique voice and curated aesthetic.
- Streamline operations by adopting Shopify’s SaaS platform, enabling simplified updates, enhanced security, and reliable scalability.
- Enable Shopify POS to power their Seattle-based brick-and-mortar retail location with centralized inventory and order management.
- Improve third-party integrations, including seamless support for ShipStation and QuickBooks to improve fulfillment and accounting workflows.
- Enhance the checkout process to make purchasing faster, easier, and more intuitive for customers—both online and in-store via POS.
- Strengthen analytics capabilities to provide actionable insights and help the business stay ahead of trends and customer needs.
These priorities were clear—but the path forward presented challenges that required strategic planning and careful execution.
Challenges and Approach
The migration from AbleCommerce to Shopify involved more than simply moving data. Our team needed to:
- Migrate complex datasets, including product catalogs, customer profiles, order history, and gift certificate balances—while ensuring data integrity throughout the process.
- Maintain SEO equity, using strategic redirects, metadata preservation, and URL mapping to protect search engine rankings and organic traffic.
- Select and customize a Shopify theme to reflect ChefShop’s established brand identity and maintain the tone and style their customers expect.
- Reimagine the navigation system, using insights from the previous site’s structure to improve usability, reduce click paths, and simplify product discovery for customers.
- Optimize the mobile experience to meet the expectations of modern shoppers who increasingly browse and buy on mobile devices.
- Deliver all of the above while staying within a conservative budget, maximizing value through careful planning, smart use of Shopify’s native capabilities, and efficient development practices.
Sandcastle worked closely with the ChefShop team throughout the project, prioritizing collaboration, transparency, and iterative testing to ensure a smooth transition.

A Fresh Digital Storefront
The new Shopify-powered ChefShop.com launched in July 2025 with immediate, positive results. Some of the standout features included:
- Improved site performance, delivering significantly faster page load times and smoother browsing—especially on mobile.
- Smarter search functionality, offering predictive product suggestions and thumbnail previews to improve discoverability.
- Wishlist capabilities, enabling customers to save and organize products into themed lists for future purchases.
- “Notify Me When Available” feature, helping customers track out-of-stock items and improving inventory management and demand forecasting.
- Integrated gift notes and special instructions, simplifying the gifting experience.
Beyond functionality, the new storefront reflects the warmth and personality that ChefShop has cultivated over decades—making it easier than ever for customers to explore, connect, and buy with confidence.
Supporting the Cherry Season: A Critical Pre-Order Function
A standout seasonal feature of the new ChefShop site is the ability to pre-order rare and highly anticipated cherry varieties before the harvest begins. This function is vital to ChefShop’s relationship with its customers and partner farmers.
Every year, ChefShop offers customers the opportunity to reserve exceptional cherry varieties—like the coveted Rainier or Black Pearl cherries—well in advance of picking season. This pre-order system allows the ChefShop team to accurately forecast demand and coordinate with small growers to ensure optimal timing for harvest and delivery.
By integrating this pre-order functionality into Shopify, Sandcastle helped streamline what was once a manually coordinated process. Customers can now place early orders online with ease, while ChefShop gains the insight needed to manage procurement and logistics more effectively.
The result? Fresher cherries, less waste, and a better experience for everyone involved.
Results and Feedback
Though the launch was recent, early results have been promising:
- Customers are now discovering and purchasing a broader spectrum of products, including items that had previously seen little or no interest—an indication that the new site’s improved navigation and search tools are making it easier to find what they want. Over time, ChefShop hopes this expanded product engagement will also lead to larger average order sizes.
- Site speed and mobile responsiveness have significantly improved, enhancing user satisfaction.
- The ChefShop team now enjoys a more flexible, intuitive backend interface, enabling them to make updates quickly and easily.
And perhaps most importantly, ChefShop’s leadership felt that their identity was preserved!

Conclusion
For companies like ChefShop — where brand story and customer experience matter as much as product selection — a successful ecommerce migration requires more than technical know-how. It demands an understanding of the business, the customer, and the nuances that make a brand unique.
Sandcastle was proud to help ChefShop take this important step forward and looks forward to supporting their continued growth on Shopify.
